【６年生】Artist Study: Pablo Picasso　 Focus style: The Blue Period and Cubism

In 6th grade Art class, students learn about the artwork of Pablo Picasso, exploring details and the story behind a name most of them have heard before. Together, we look at his life story and think about what makes his art special.

Many students were surprised by details of his life, such as how poor he was when he moved to France from Spain and how he had to burn many of his paintings to stay warm in the winter.

We looked at his Blue Period, when he painted mainly in blue and green due to the deep sadness he felt after his friend died. We noticed that in a number of his artworks he painted guitars, and we wondered why this was.

Students learned that he created a new style of art called Cubism, in which he imagined viewing different angles of a scene within a single picture.

We worked on a project that combined the Blue Period and Cubism, exploring ways to express ourselves in this style while incorporating a guitar element. It is always inspiring to see the diversity of creative expression in students.

We also had an interdisciplinary project, collaborating with Japanese and Music classes to create an expressive piece that involved writing about their elementary school life, composing music that reflects their emotions, and creating a Cubist-style kanji that represents their work.

６年生の図工の授業では、児童はパブロ・ピカソの作品について学びます。多くの児童がこれまでに名前を聞いたことのある人物について、その詳細や背景にある物語を探っていきます。児童たちは彼の人生の物語を知り、彼の芸術の特別な点は何かを一緒に考えます。

多くの児童は、彼がスペインからフランスへ移住したときに非常に貧しかったことや、冬を暖かく過ごすために自分の絵をたくさん燃やさなければならなかったことなど、彼の人生のエピソードに驚いていました。

また、彼の「青の時代」についても学びました。この時期の彼は、友人の死による深い悲しみから、主に青や緑を使って絵を描いていました。さらに、彼の作品の中にギターが多く描かれていることに気づき、なぜギターが描かれているのかを考えました。

児童たちはまた、「キュビスム」と呼ばれる新しい美術の様式を彼が生み出したことも学びました。これは、一つの画面の中に、異なる角度から見た様子を同時に表現するという考え方です。

制作活動では、「青の時代」とキュビスムを組み合わせた作品に取り組み、ギターの要素を取り入れながら、この様式で自分自身を表現する方法を探りました。児童一人ひとりの多様で創造的な表現を見ることは、いつも大きな刺激となります。

また、国語科と音楽科との教科横断的なプロジェクトにも取り組みました。小学校生活についての文章を書き、自分の感情を反映した音楽を作り、さらに作品を表すキュビスム風の漢字を制作することで、表現活動を行いました。
